Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is classified in three types.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC,) although rare is an aggressive, and fast-growing cancer of the thyroid gland. It is considered to be a lethal form of cancer, and is difficult to cure. It is caused by the rapid growth of cancer cells, leading to a large, hard mass in the neck. Follicular thyroid cancer: This originates from the follicular cells of the thyroid gland, where cancer cells are similar to normal thyroid cells. Larger and aggressive tumors may spread to the lungs and bones.
The treatment involves surgery (lobectomy, completion thyroidectomy, or total thyroidectomy) followed by radioactive iodine therapy or other systemic therapies based on the stage.

- A lump or swelling in the neck, which may grow slowly.
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing.
- Hoarseness or changes in voice.
- Neck pain or discomfort.
- Swollen lymph nodes.
Medullary thyroid cancer: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a thyroid cancer that originates in the parafollicular C cells in the thyroid gland, which produce the hormone calcitonin. The role of Calcitonin’s is to reduce the amount of calcium in the bloodstream by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, cells of breaking down bone and releasing calcium into the blood. This hormone may also might also stimulate bone formation.
Calcitonin is used to treat
- Paget’s disease of the bone.
- Osteoporosis.
Symptoms of Medullary thyroid cancer could be:
- A lump or swelling in the neck, which may grow slowly.
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing.
- Hoarseness or changes in voice.
- Neck pain or discomfort.
- Changes in bowel habits.
- Other Possible Symptoms may include Neck Pain, Cough, Swollen Lymph Nodes, Flushing. Weight Loss and fatigue
