Pelvic Adhesions
Pelvic adhesions are bands of scar tissue that form between pelvic organs, like the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, and other internal surfaces, thereby binding them together.
Common Causes of Pelvic adhesion:
- Surgery: Abdominal or pelvic surgeries, including C-sections, could lead to adhesions.
- Endometriosis: This condition causes uterine tissue to grow outside the uterus, leading to inflammation and could result in the scar tissue formation.
- Infection: Infections such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) can also lead to the formation of adhesions.
- Other Conditions: Injury or trauma to the pelvic area may cause pelvic adhesions.
Pelvic Adhesions
Symptoms:
Many people with pelvic adhesions are asymptomatic. However, when symptoms are present, they can include:
- Chronic pelvic pain: Pain that is localized or deep within the pelvis.
- Pain during intercourse: This can occur if ovaries are trapped by scar tissue.
- Infertility: Adhesions can block the fallopian tubes, preventing sperm from reaching the egg or hindering the movement of an embryo.
- Bowel obstruction: Adhesions can bind the intestines together, leading to severe abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, nausea, and vomiting.
- Urinary issues: Adhesions can affect the bladder’s capacity and emptying, causing pain and frequent urination.
