Fibroids

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumours made up of muscle and fibrous connective tissues. These generally grow in the muscle wall of the uterus (intramural), under the uterine lining (submucosal), or just under the outside of the uterus (subserosal). They can also be attached to the uterus by a stalk (pedunculated).

Fibroids are the type of growth in the pelvic area, with 50-70% of women developing them by menopause.

Fibroids

Common Symptoms of Fibroids:

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: It is a common symptom that could lead to anaemia.

Pelvic Pain or Pressure:  Larger fibroids press on other organs, thereby causing a feeling of heaviness, pressure, or pain in the lower abdomen.

Urinary and Bowel Problems: Pressure on the bladder results in frequent urination, while pressure on the rectum may lead to constipation.

Fertility Issues: Fibroids can sometimes interfere with pregnancy or carrying a pregnancy to term.

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Hormonal Influence: Estrogen and progesterone play a role in fibroid growth.
  • The risk increases in the event of a family history of Fibroids
  • Obesity: Being overweight or obese is a risk factor.
  • Diet: A diet high in red meat and low in vitamin D may increase the risk.
