Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to closely examine the cervix with a magnified, lighted instrument called a colposcope.

The procedure is often performed after an abnormal Pap smear or positive HPV test. If suspicious areas are found, a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken for further testing.

Thus, colposcopy helps:

➔To investigate abnormal cervical cell changes found during a Pap smear.

➔To get a closer look at the cervix after a positive HPV test.

➔To diagnose or investigate other issues like genital warts, inflammation (cervicitis), or noncancerous growths like polyps.

➔To look for precancerous cells that can be treated before they become cancerous.
