Cervical Biopsy

In cervical biopsy procedure a small piece of tissue from the cervix is removed for examination to check for cancer or precancerous conditions. It my be performed as part of a colposcopy, a procedure that uses a magnifying instrument to examine the cervix, besides also may be recommended after an abnormal Pap test or positive HPV test. 

Cervical biopsy is done:

➔To diagnose abnormalities cervical cancer or precancerous cells (dysplasia). 

➔After abnormal screening: To reconfirm the results of an abnormal Pap smear or a positive human papillomavirus (HPV) test. 

➔To diagnose other conditions of noncancerous growths like polyps or to check for genital warts, which are linked to HPV. 

The techniques to conduct a cervical biopsy may be,

➔Colposcopy-guided: Where a colposcope is used to get a close-up view of the cervix. 

➔Punch biopsy: A sharp tool is used to pinch off small samples of cervical tissue. 

➔Endocervical curettage (ECC): A small, spoon-shaped instrument or a thin brush is used to scrape tissue from inside the cervix. 

➔Cone biopsy (conization): A cone-shaped piece of tissue is surgically removed from the cervix.
