Female Genital Mutilation Treatment

Female genital mutilation (FGM) in India, is a harmful traditional practice involving in the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. There are no medical reasons for this practice.

The same can be revered using surgical options to reconstruct the external genital. The choice of surgery depends on the type of mutilation undergone like:

Deinfibulation: This is the recommended procedure for women who have undergone Type III FGM (infibulation), where the vaginal opening has been narrowed and sealed by scar tissue. This procedure involves cutting and opening the scar tissue to restore a more natural vaginal opening. This procedure can help alleviate problems with urination, menstruation, and painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).

Clitoral Reconstruction: This surgery aims to expose the remaining part of the clitoris, which may have been removed or buried under scar tissue in Type I, II, or III FGM. By removing scar tissue and mobilizing the remaining clitoral body. This procedure helps to restore form, besides improving clitoral sensation and function.

Other Reconstructive Techniques: Depending on the extent of the mutilation, a variety of techniques could be used, including scar tissue removal, labia reconstruction, and using tissue grafts to restore a more normal appearance to the vulva depending on the patient’s anatomy.
