Colporrhaphy

Colporrhaphy is a surgical procedure to repair weakened vaginal walls, primarily to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) like a cystocele (prolapsed bladder) or rectocele (prolapsed rectum). The surgery strengthens the vaginal wall by plicating (folding) and suturing the fascia to improve pelvic support, which can help alleviate symptoms like urinary incontinence, difficulty with bowel movements, and pelvic discomfort.

➔A repair for pelvic organ prolapses: It addresses POP, a condition where pelvic organs drop due to weakened muscles and tissues in the vaginal wall. 

➔A strengthening procedure: The surgery involves strengthening the vaginal walls by suturing the weakened tissue beneath them.

Objectives of Colporrhaphy are

To correct organ prolapse: To return organs like the bladder and rectum to their normal position. 

➔To relieve symptoms: To help with problems such as urinary incontinence, difficulty urinating or having a bowel movement, and chronic vaginal discomfort. 

Types of colporrhaphy

➔Anterior colporrhaphy: Specifically repairs the anterior (front) vaginal wall, often to correct a cystocele. 

➔Posterior colporrhaphy: Repairs the posterior (back) vaginal wall, often to correct a rectocele. 

➔Anterior and posterior repair: A procedure that addresses both the anterior and posterior vaginal walls.
