Dilation and Curettage
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that involves dilating the cervix and scraping or suctioning tissue from the lining of the uterus
Dilation: The cervix, the lower, narrow part of the uterus, is opened or widened.
Curettage: A spoon-shaped instrument called a curette is used to scrape and remove tissue from the uterine lining (endometrium). Sometimes suction is used instead of, or in addition to, scraping.
Dilation and curettage done for:
➔Diagnosis: To examine the uterine lining for abnormal cells or to find the cause of heavy or post-menopausal bleeding.
➔Treatment:
- To remove all tissue from the uterus after a miscarriage.
- To perform an abortion.
- To treat heavy menstrual bleeding.
