Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic surgical oncology is a minimally invasive cancer surgery that uses a laparoscope and other specialized instruments to remove tumors through small incisions. Thus, resulting in less pain, a shorter recovery time, and smaller scars compared to traditional surgery. It is commonly used for cancers in the area like the abdomen, pelvis, and chest. Some such cancers are colorectal, gynecologic, liver, and some lung cancers, besides other types of cancers like head and neck or kidney cancers.

The steps of Laparoscopic surgical oncology are:

➔Small incisions, of about 4–5 mm, are made in the abdomen.

➔Gas is introduced into the abdomen thereby creating working space.

➔A laparoscope, is inserted through one incision to get a magnified view of the surgical area on a monitor.

➔Other specialized surgical instruments are inserted using the additional small incisions.

➔The cancerous tissue is operated upon using these instruments while watching the monitor.

➔The tumor is then removed through one of the incisions.

Applications

Commonly used for: Colorectal, gynecologic (cervical, ovarian, endometrial), liver, and certain types of lung cancer.

➔Also used for: Kidney and head and neck cancers.
